In matter of original claim of NO# 853088 of Robert Dunbar alias Robert Danvars late of Company B, 35th Regt. U.S.C.T Infantry on this 6th day of April 1899 personal appraised before me a Notary Public only authorized to administer oath in and for the County of Craven and state of North Carolina.
Mr. Robert Dunbar alias Danvar age 52 years, Residents of Stonewall, NC who being only sworn according to law discloses as follows in relation to his original claim under general law: I enlisted a well and hasty young man June 2 1863 at New Bern, NC on about the 20th of July 1863, I was ill with fever. On July 30 1863 my company and regiment left New Bern for Polly Island South Carolina. I was sick with fever and was sent to the hospital and could not go. I was with John Roe of Company A 35th Regt. U.S.C.T. and the others sick in the hospital. When released from the hospital we were detached to the 36th U.S.C.T. Regt. Commanded by Col. Grafer and were carried to Portsmouth, VA. On or about the month of September 1863. Then I became ill with measles, diarrhea and piles. I became partially blind. I was in the hospital over four weeks. I remained detached to the 36th Regt. U.S.C.T. until about the last of January 1864. I was ordered with the detachment to go to my Company B 35th and Regiment, which was at Polly Island SC. On the way the Smallpox broke out in the detachment. I was sick with the Small Pox and was vaccinated in the left arm. I was hospitalized with the Small Pox and treated by doctors and by exposure and cold I was sick with rheumatism, which caused the right leg to become 4 inches shorter than the other was and caused a limp. The results of the measles and Small Pox caused total blindness of the left eye and partial blindness in the right eye. The sight of the left eye has been gone over three years. I can not see at all out of the left eye. I was continually troubled with Diarrhea and the piles. I had it two or three times a week, which caused pain in the stomach. The reason I got the testimony of John Roe is because he was with me in the detachment when my company and regiment was at Polly Island, SC., he was sick too. There are records of my disabilities in the Surgeon General office at Washington, DC. I was in hospital at each place from the time I was first ill in New Bern, NC (July 1863), Portsmouth, VA (September 1863) and Polly Island, SC (July 1864). When I left the Hospital at Polly Island, SC I join my company and Regiment on about May 1864 at Jacksonville, Florida, where my Company and Regiment took part in the battle of Honey Hill, SC November 30 1864. I could not go with the unit when they took Charleston, SC July 1865, I was ill with rheumatism, diarrhea, piles and partially blind. I was also in the hospital during the spring 1866 and under treatment of Surgeon at the time we were mustered out. I have never the right eye. I claim pension right under act of August 4 1886 of congress and subsequent acts there to. I can’t do anything. I ask that my original claim be taken up and settled and that my Post Office address be listed Stonewall, Pamlico County, NC."
